Commodore Banquet Was Great! Friday October, 26th

This year's banquet was held on October 26 at the Brink Lounge. Over 70 people enjoyed a great awards presentation, Commodore Klauser was a fantastic master of ceremonies as he expertly worked his way though a multimedia awards show put together by Don Sanford, Brian Louther, Brian Anderson, and Martha Foley. Jerry Simon said "This is one of the best banquets that I can remember in a long time". Music by The New You Trio kept the party going late into the night. Pictures from the event coming soon.

MYC'ers Mabel, Scott, Cynthia, and Brian enjoy the view across Lake Mendota from Bob Yost's pier as they await the sunset and the boat parade.

"Wow, did you see that? I think those kids in that Master Craft just mooned us," said Scotty. "Yeah, it happens to me all the time," replied Mabel. "Those wake boarders think they're so hot. It's not like the old days when the H-714 sailed by every Sunday afternoon. A Boaters... now those guys were hot. Oh, the stories this pier could tell," she said wistfully.

Message From the Commodore

I want to thank the membership of the Mendota Yacht Club for supporting the2012 ILYA Championship Regatta on Lake Mendota. We just capped off two successful extended weekends of racing. The regatta feedback has
been overwhelmingly positive. Sailors love coming to Madison, not just for the sailing, but also for the vibrant array of social activities that Madison offers.
I want to give a special thank-you to all the volunteers, not just from MYC but also from the Lake Monona Sailing Club, Lake Kegonsa Sailing Club, Madison Lakes Yacht Club and countless friends and neighbors who helped make this event a success. I also want to thank our partner organizations in this endeavor: the ILYA and the UW Hoofers. Together we fielded a crew of slightly more than 200 (212 to be exact) volunteers who helped out as Taxi Boat Drivers, Cantina Servers, Launch Ramp wranglers, RC Boat Drivers and many, many more positions that I can't begin to list.

Although we won't know the final number for a few weeks, MYC was guaranteed a profit for hosting the regatta. The ILYA has expressed a desire to come to Madison every 5-7 years. I hope that the membership will support bringing the ILYA Championship regatta back to Lake Mendota in a few years. In order to make this happen the MYC board merely needs to submit an official "bid' to the ILYA.

I want to provide special recognition to Trey Sprinkman for his vigorous leadership for this event. As the MYC Chair for this event, it has been a three year journey for Trey, and he has represented the MYC well.

There are so many other MYC members that contributed to the success of this event that I will not attempt to single each one of you out, but please know that the MYC appreciates your effort!

I asked Don Sanford to include a few photos from the regatta to my message. More from other photographers will be posted soon at mendotayc.org

Again, thank you for your time, talent and support.

Thanks to Keith and Wendy for a Great Party!!

A bloody good time was had by all at Keith Kreps and Wendy Peterson’s Bloody Mary party. The spicy vodka applied just the right amount of zip and the Mimosas were refreshing for those that could not handle the heat. The food was over the top. Thank you Keith and Wendy for hosting the best party of the year.

Payton Regatta Sailing Photos

Lots of them from Steve Lewis on the Racing Photos page:

16 Years of Great Fun

Don and Scotty enjoy Scotty's special recipe ice tea
Sixteen years ago our then PRO James Payton started a new MYC tradition of a weekend club regatta and a party. The first year he roasted a pig while we all sailed and we gathered to enjoy the party at the Maple Bluff Marina after the first day of sailing. This was the beginning of the MYC Payton Regatta. Over the years the pig roasting has faded after a number of events.

In recent years, Social Chair Grant and his team of Steve and Scotty have help evolve this social event in to a steak feed and pot luck.

This year about 60 sailors and friends enjoyed a great evening at the Maple Bluff Beach with good food and company. Thanks to all of you for bringing a dish to pass, and to Scotty for his Ice tea, Steve for cooking the stakes and Grant for the potatoes and pulling it all together.

"The ILYA Regatta is going to be awesome. Trey Sprinkman and his team are going full speed ahead to make this a really great event.

We need help with HOUSING. We need to find housing for six teams of judges and many competators as well. Our traveling racers have always been treated wonderfully racing off the lake. Now it's time for us to open our doors and show our hospitality.

I would like to personally appeal to every member to consider helping in the housing effort. Please download this document, fill it out, and return it to me. if it is easier just give me a call. Thanks, in advance.".

Rozell Henkel

Ernie and Rozell sailing a cub boat in the "parents series" that MYC ran back in the old days.  One evening a week parents would compete using their children's cub boat.

Rozell Henkel, longtime MYC judge, mentor and cheerleader to sailors young and old, passed away on Sunday, March 11. She was 96. “When I joined our club in 1977, Rozell and her husband Ernie had been judging our races for, well… forever. Everyone knew them. Continue reading at our Celestial Members page.

2012 Club Calendar is in the works

(Draft Version)
The Race Committee has been working on the 2012 calendar. Here (obsolete) is the working version that is unofficial and not yet ben approved by the board. However, I have it on good authority that this version is very close and you could use it to start figuring out your summer plans and even what days you might volunteer for the ILYA regatta on Mendota in August. We will need volunteers, it's an awesome event and fun to be involved. If you have questions or corrections about the calendar contact your fleet captain.

STICK TO SAILING

It seems that I'm always looking for that perfect sport that complements sailing. To this day I have never really met someone that is a great sailor and golfer. Maybe it is sailing and bowling?

Well, if the MYC Bowling Social Fundraiser is any indication of capability with the sports then my answer is no . We certainly had the desire with a turn out of 37 bowlers. We had spectators, beer and soda drinkers, pizza eaters, and even karaoke singers!

Bob Mclaren from team Veloce seemed to be the top dog with 4 strikes in a row! The kids were the amazing, many of them out bowled the adults. The event was lots of fun and a great success raising some money to support socials this year. Click 2012 Bowling Photos - by Grant Frautschi to see photos.

On that subject, I'm looking for people that would like to donate to social functions, host a social function, or most importantly help. If you can help or have ideas for social or even what you would like to see let me know. mail to:info@mendotayc.org

Trey Sprinkman's ILYA Championship Regatta News

2012 ILYA Championship Regatta
August 9-12 & 16-19, Lake Mendota

"I’m here with the latest update on our plans and requests for your help as we welcome 225 racing yachts and over 1,000 sailors and guests to Lake Mendota this August.

It is hard to believe that we are only 6 months away from hosting the first two-weekend format Inlands. The MYC regatta committee, Hoofers and the ILYA met recently at Hi-Way Harry’s in Johnson Creek to discuss where we are and where we need to get to prior to August 9th.

SPONSORSHIP

We need sponsors. The ILYA has sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals for the upcoming regatta. The ILYA is a 501.c.3, so donations can be specified for the regatta. If you or your business would like to become a sponsor, please contact me. I’ll send you a marketing packet with all the info.

If you’d like to call on one of our potential sponsors or suggest a sponsor, please let me know. These calls are always more successful if we have a personal connection.

THE SCHEDULE:

I want to remind everyone on the schedule and regatta format. We are trying two back to back regattas for the first time, this will likely improve turnout and help our volunteer staff.
• August 9-12: E, C and I-20 fleets
• August 16-19: A, MC and 420 Fleets
• MYC races will take two-weekend breaks this August

THE VENUE:

• Three courses will be set each weekend.
• Launching and regatta headquarters will be at Governor Nelson State Park for all fleets.
• 420’s new to the regatta format will launch from Burrows Park.

VOLUNTEERS:

It will take a big crew of us to bring this regatta together. Some volunteers will come from the ILYA and Hoofers. This will significantly help our club out during the two back to back weekends.

The ILYA will take care of:
• Registration:
• Trophies
• PRO’s & Judges. (We need a few more volunteer boats to complete their needs)

Next, my thanks to these big-hearted MYC’ers who have come aboard thus far:

COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
• Darby Sugar is handling special events and the nightly dining and entertainment
• Stephan Schmidt is in charge of temporary housing for the PRO’s and Judges
• Greg Simon 420 Regatta Chair
• Don Sanford will be in charge of PR
• Bill Shelton will be our regatta scorer
• Trey Sprinkman hospitality and lodging
• Paul Dehn Water Operation: boats and drivers

We need you:
• Chair and Asst. Chair Park Activities at Governor Nelson
• Chair and Asst. Chair Concessions in the park
• Asst. Chair Entertainment
• Asst. Chair & Volunteer Water Operations: boats and drivers
• Asst. Chair PR Coordinate with Don Sanford
• All other volunteers

Ok, you’re thinking this sounds like fun, but what can I do? If you are interested in one of these jobs and helping the committee chairs let me know. My contact info is below. If you are new to the club and want to get involved, we’ll find a place for you. If you’re not sure what you could do, but would like to help, come to our regatta meeting.

Sincerely,
Trey
