Official Number: AFSP 3

Awarded For: July 4th all-fleet handicap 1st Place

Physical Description: Bowl, Revere, 24", Sterling Silver with ladle. Not engraved with winner's names.

Deed/History: This sterling silver bowl and ladle was originally presented by Mr. & Mrs. Morgan Manchester around 1955. They were E and C-Scow sailors and owners of a department store in Madison. Originally awarded to the winner of the Victory Day All-fleet handicap race held near the anniversary of V-J day. When Victory Day became a guest skipper race around 2000, the bowl was repurposed for the winner of the Fourth of July All-Fleet handicap race. The Manchester bowl is unique for several reasons: It is sterling silver, not silver plate and it is not engraved with the winner’s names. Custom dictates that if a member is having a big party to celebrate a special occasion, he or she can call the current holder of the bowl and ask to borrow it. Around 2000, the Victory Day race was changed to a guest skipper race, with trophies for the winner in each fleet. The only requirement being that the boat had to be skippered by a guest skipper. At one point our sailing instructions said, “Pets are not excluded.” Back in the days when boats were wood and crew members spent every free moment bailing, the club used to present the Aitken Liberty trophy for the July 4, All-Fleet handicap race. In addition to the all-fleet handicap trophy, there were other trophies for fleet handicap and possibly the gun for each fleet. Strangely, even though the Aitken trophy vanished into thin air sometime in the 1990s (or before) it was “awarded” as a picture trophy. Then in 2000, Commodore Steve Suhr decided to change things up. The Victory Day Manchester trophy was reassigned as the July 4 All-Fleet handicap. We still awarded the individual fleet awards.
